Students strike against new federal school lunch rules

What the hell is (Thunder Thighs) Michelle Obama and the government doing in school cafeterias…?

—————————————————————————————————-

With new federal guidelines dictating what is served at school cafeterias during lunch time, school districts all over the country have reworked their menus to accommodate the new rules.  The changes include serving more whole grains, daily doses of fruits and vegetables, less sugar and salt, and only low- or non-fat milk.

For the first time, school lunches must have age-aligned calorie maximums, capping the amount of calories high school students eat to around 850 calories.  The new restrictions all come from the updated Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and are funded by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 – legislation promoted by Michelle Obama.

While the changes may seem like a step in a healthier direction, not all students are finding them so tasty.  On Monday, about 70 percent of the 830 students at Mukwonago High School in Wisconsin who typically buy their lunch boycotted the school’s cafeteria, the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reported.  The high schoolers were joined by middle schoolers in the district, reducing the number of lunches sold by half.

Come back little Sheba…

Washington to bring home diplomats without securing deal with Islamabad to end blockade on NATO convoys to Afghanistan.

The United States is withdrawing its team of negotiators from Pakistan without securing a long-sought deal with Islamabad to allow trucks to again supply NATO troops in neighboring Afghanistan, the Pentagon has said.

“The decision was reached to bring the team home for a short period of time,” George Little, Pentagon spokesman, told reporters on Monday.

The team of negotiators had been in Pakistan for about six weeks, he said, as US officials had believed they were close to a deal with Islamabad to lift the blockade on NATO convoys.

But no breakthrough was imminent and there was no scheduled date for a resumption of the negotiations, Little said.

Should Corporations Bankroll National Parks?

Until all the graft and corruption is eliminated in the government…NO

Until wall street and the bankers are brought to bare…NO

Until pac’s and super pac’s are ruled illegal…NO

Until lobbyists are corralled and controlled…NO

—————————————————————————————

Sure our parks are strapped for cash, but the idea of a Coke banner over Mt. Rushmore is a tad bit creepy.

I love national parks—from the regal slopes of Yellowstone to the mind-bending vastness of the Grand Canyon. Like everyone else, I go to parks to get away from the bells and whistles of everyday life. So I can completely understand why a lot of people are creeped out by the mere prospect of private companies playing a role in the National Park Service.

And yet, our parks are strapped for cash. A few bucks from a big business could go a long way toward better trails, nicer facilities, and more ranger programs. So should companies fund the parks, or are these natural spaces best left free of corporate interference? The question has been debated over the years, with flare-ups around the time the Bush administration attempted to privatize parts of the park service back in 2003 and last fall when there was concern that Coca-Cola had interfered in a plan to stop selling disposable plastic water bottles in the parks.
