Tumblr, the fast-growing online community, has begun its first serious attempt to generate revenue from its tens of millions of users by introducing “sponsored” posts from advertisers to some of its most popular pages. Rather than introducing traditional online advertisements, the thought of which David Karp, Tumblr’s founder and chief executive, said in 2010 “turns our stomachs”, brands will pay $25,000 or more to promote their pages and specific posts, using existing elements of the site.
